Jerod Mayo: The New Patriots Head Coach

A Historic Hiring for the New England Patriots

On Wednesday, February 8, 2023, the New England Patriots made history by naming Jerod Mayo as their new head coach, making him the first Black head coach in the team's history.

Mayo, a former linebacker for the Patriots, has been with the organization since 2008. He played in 103 games during his career, racking up 905 total tackles. He was named captain for seven consecutive seasons from 2009 to 2015.

Mayo's Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Mayo joined the Patriots coaching staff in 2019 as an inside linebackers coach. He was promoted to outside linebackers coach in 2020.

Mayo's coaching experience, combined with his leadership qualities and knowledge of the Patriots system, made him a strong candidate for the head coaching position.

The Patriots' New Era

Mayo's hiring marks a new era for the Patriots, who have been led by Bill Belichick for the past 24 seasons. Belichick, who is widely considered one of the greatest coaches in NFL history, retired on Thursday, February 9, 2023.

Mayo will have big shoes to fill, but he is confident that he can lead the Patriots to continued success. He said in a statement, "I am honored to be the next head coach of the New England Patriots. This is a dream come true for me, and I am excited to get to work."
